A fiber optic system

Friday, April 25th, 2008

A basic fiber optic system is made up of a transmitting device, an optical fiber cable, and a receiver. In the set up mentioned above, the job of a transmitting device is to essentially generate the light signal. Next in line comes the optical fiber cable, which performs the business of carrying the light. Last but not the least, is the all important task of accepting the light signal transmitted, and this is carried out by the receiver.
As can be gauged from what is mentioned above, we now take a look at a critical component of a fiber optic system, namely an optical fiber cable. The above mentioned variety of cable showcases a large bandwidth, coupled together with a small diameter, as also light weight. This breed of cable, which forms a part of any fiber optic system, has the ability to deliver effective results, within limited space. The space constraints experienced by a majority of end users, in the dual fields of computers and information technology, as also other related domains, is a major factor, which works in favor of an optical fiber cable. The saving of valuable conduit space, within existing duct systems, is something else, which is credited to the optical fiber cable.
It is interesting to know that a long haul fiber optic system requires single mode optical fibers with very high performance. This variety of fiber exhibits lower loss, and less signal distortion. On the other hand, short distance systems lean towards multimode technology. Local area networks and military systems are two fitting examples of short distance systems.
There are many advantages of using a fiber optic system, some of which include, lower signal attenuation, greatly increased bandwidth and capacity, no cross talk and near perfect signal security, resistance to radiation and corrosion, overall system economy and lower installation cost, elimination of short circuit and sparks factor, etc.
After going through everything mentioned above, it should come as no surprise that, a fiber optic system has established itself, as a force to reckon with, in a plethora of fields.
